FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between a blind and a shade?
While a blind is made up of a system of slats or louvers that tilt open and closed to allow light in, shades are made from fabric which can be raised or lowered to your desired height. While blinds can also be raised or lowered, they are often left in the lowered position.
What types of shades are available?
We offer a variety of custom shade styles including roller shades, cellular shades, roman shades, pleated shades, cascade sheer shades (aka zebra shades), solar shades and woven wood / bamboo shades.
Do shades have light gaps?
All shades will have some gap when inside mounted. This is to allow the material to raise and lower without rubbing against the window frame. Cellular shades typically have the smallest gaps (making them ideal blackout options) while roller shade gaps are the widest. Keep this in mind if light blocking is your primary goal.

Window Shades: The Versatile Solution for Every Room in Your Home
Window shades are one of the most versatile and popular choices for window treatments, offering a perfect blend of style, function, and convenience. Whether you’re looking for privacy, light control, energy efficiency, or simply a decorative touch, window shades can meet your needs with their wide range of materials, designs, and customization options.
From bedrooms and living rooms to kitchens and bathrooms, window shades are an excellent solution for every room in your home. They come in various styles such as roller shades, Roman shades, cellular shades, and more, each offering unique benefits tailored to different interior design styles and functional needs.
What Are Window Shades?
Window shades are fabric-based window coverings that roll, fold, or stack neatly at the top of your window when raised and provide full coverage when lowered. Unlike blinds, which consist of individual slats that can be tilted, window shades are made from a continuous piece of material that moves up and down to control light and privacy.
Their streamlined design gives them a minimalist appearance that can easily complement any room. Whether you want a sleek and modern look or a more traditional and elegant design, window shades can be customized to fit your style preferences. Available in a variety of fabrics, colors, and patterns, these shades not only enhance your room’s aesthetic but also offer practical benefits like insulation, light filtering, and UV protection.
Types of Window Shades
When choosing custom window shades, understanding the different types available can help you select the best option for your home. Here’s an overview of the most popular types of window shades and their key features:
- Roller Shades: Roller shades are simple and elegant, made from a single piece of fabric that rolls up neatly into a tube at the top of the window. They are available in a wide range of materials, from light-filtering and sheer to blackout fabrics, making them versatile enough for any room. Roller shades are perfect for those who want a clean, modern look with easy operation.
- Roman Shades: Roman shades are a classic choice that adds a touch of elegance to any space. Made from soft fabric that folds into pleats when raised, Roman shades offer a timeless and luxurious look. They are available in a wide range of fabrics, colors, and patterns, allowing you to create a more decorative look while still providing light control and privacy.
- Cellular Shades (Honeycomb Shades): Cellular shades are designed for energy efficiency, featuring a honeycomb structure that traps air and provides insulation for your windows. These shades help regulate indoor temperatures by reducing heat transfer through windows, keeping your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Cellular shades are available in both light-filtering and blackout options, making them ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, and more.
- Solar Shades: Solar shades are perfect for rooms that receive a lot of direct sunlight. These shades are made from a special fabric that blocks UV rays and reduces glare without completely blocking your view. Solar shades are ideal for rooms with large windows or for outdoor-facing spaces like patios or sunrooms, where you want to enjoy the view while still controlling the intensity of sunlight.
- Sheer Shades: Sheer shades offer the best of both worlds—combining the soft look of fabric shades with the adjustable light control of blinds. These shades feature two layers of sheer fabric with horizontal fabric vanes in between. When the vanes are open, light is gently diffused through the sheer fabric. When closed, the vanes provide privacy and light control.
- Cascade Shades (Zebra Shades): Cascade Shades offer an innovative and stylish design with alternating bands of sheer and solid fabric, providing versatile light control and privacy options. They seamlessly transition from light filtering to near blackout, complementing modern interiors and ensuring comfort and elegance for your home.
- Woven Wood Shades: Woven wood shades, also known as bamboo or natural shades, add warmth and texture to a room by bringing in natural materials like wood, bamboo, or grasses. These shades filter light in a unique way, creating a cozy and organic feel that complements a wide range of interior styles.
- Skylight Shades: Skylight Shades are specifically designed to provide optimal light control and energy efficiency for hard-to-reach skylight windows. These shades not only block excessive sunlight but also help regulate temperature by insulating your space from outdoor heat and cold. With sleek designs and easy operation, Skylight Shades offer a practical and stylish solution for enhancing comfort while maintaining a clear, unobstructed view of the sky.
Benefits of Window Shades
Window shades offer several advantages that make them a smart choice for homeowners looking to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of their space. Here are some of the key benefits of window shades:
- Light Control: One of the primary functions of custom window shades is to control the amount of natural light entering your room. Whether you want to completely block out light for a cozy movie night or allow a soft glow to fill the room, window shades offer varying levels of light control to meet your needs. Depending on the fabric and style you choose, you can achieve anything from light filtering to total blackout.
- Privacy: Custom window shades provide excellent privacy, particularly when fully lowered. If your home is close to neighbors or faces a busy street, shades give you the option to enjoy your space without feeling exposed. Many shades also offer privacy without sacrificing natural light, allowing you to keep your room bright and airy while maintaining a sense of security.
- Energy Efficiency: Many window shades are designed to improve energy efficiency by reducing heat transfer through your windows. Cellular shades, for example, are particularly effective at insulating your windows, helping to keep your home comfortable year-round and reducing your energy bills.
- UV Protection: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade and damage your furniture, flooring, and artwork. Window shades, particularly solar shades and blackout shades, help protect your interiors by blocking harmful UV rays, preserving the beauty of your home.
- Style and Versatility: Window shades come in a vast array of styles, colors, and fabrics, making it easy to find the perfect fit for any room in your home. Whether you prefer a modern, minimalist look or a more traditional, decorative style, window shades can be customized to match your décor and aesthetic preferences.
- Easy Operation: Most modern window shades are easy to operate, with options for manual pull cords, cordless systems for enhanced safety, or motorized systems for ultimate convenience. Motorized shades allow you to control your window treatments with the push of a button or even through smart home automation, making them a great option for hard-to-reach windows or for adding convenience to your daily routine.

Whether you want neutral tones that blend seamlessly into your space or bold colors that make a statement, we have options to suit every style.

Cordless and motorized systems are especially popular for homes with children or pets, offering enhanced safety and ease of use.

Where to Use Window Shades in Your Home
Window shades are incredibly versatile and work well in every room of your home. Here are some ideas on where and how to use different types of window shades:
- Living Rooms: Roller or sheer shades provide soft, diffused light while still allowing you to enjoy your view, making them ideal for living rooms.
- Bedrooms: Blackout or room-darkening cellular shades help create a restful environment by blocking out light, perfect for ensuring a good night’s sleep.
- Kitchens: Woven wood or Roman shades add warmth and texture to your kitchen while still allowing natural light to brighten the space.
- Bathrooms: Cellular or pleated shades provide privacy and moisture resistance, making them a practical choice for bathrooms.
