Curtains and Shades That Dress Up a Room

Want to dress up a room? Window shades and drapery can do just that with texture, patterns, and luxurious fabrics.

Transform Your Space with Elegant Window Treatments

The easiest way to cover a window is a basic white blinds or shades. But maybe you want more from your window treatments? A dressier look, perhaps, something to take your room from drab to fab? Blinds To Go has a wide selection of elegant and modern window treatments that will do so much more than just cover your window.

Among the many options to dress up a room, Roman shades for windows are a classic choice. Roman Shades are fabric shades that traditionally have soft, billowy folds. Classic roman shades when raised, they fold into themselves, creating a simple, dressy ambiance. Other contemporary fold styles exist, like "Waterfall roman shades" which lay seamlessly flat when in the down/closed position, and "Flat roman shades" which, when closed, look like panels joined by seams.

The Benefits of Roman Shades for Dressing Up a Room

Roman shades can be the focal point of the room with bold patterns, contrasting colors, interesting textures, or a combination of all three. Roman blinds are also fairly versatile, providing either light-filtering functionality or with a sewn in blackout lining for a better night's sleep. The softness of their shape allows for use of both bold and muted colors in design. You can even motorize them to combat the inconvenience of a hard-to-reach window, or simply to make them more modern known as Motorized roman shades. The fact that they are made from fabrics similar to fine drapery makes them a great standalone option for that finishing touch as designer roman shades.

Adding Texture and Depth with Cellular Shades

Another one of my favorite ways to dress up a room is with unexpected texture. Most shades have a selection that includes at least one fabric with a texture and a great example is our cellular shades in our Borgata fabric. The pattern itself is actually embossed into the fabric, which creates subtle dimension when light filters through and provides a look that subtly stands out. Our Rivera collection Cellular Shades will add design interest to any space, with a subtle sheerness that allows light to pour in and play off its linen-like texture.

Sheer Shades: The Modern Twist on Classic Elegance

If neither of these strike your fancy, perhaps Sheer Shades will catch your eye — and what's dressier than sheer? Our Sheer Shades give the traditional curtain sheer a modern twist with added versatility. With our Cascade sheer shades (or Zebra Shades), your windows can have more than just a plain roller. Their alternating stripes allow you to align them and see out to enjoy your view, or to actually create privacy or a room-darkening effect. They can also be rolled up for a completely unobstructed view. Their sister shade, our Serenity sheer shades, has an internal layer to mimic this functionality. When closed, the Serenity appears to have soft, classy folds much like a Roman Shade. When open, you have the option to see through the slats. Either of these are a fantastic choice for someone wanting a window covering that is dressy and modern.

Layering Curtains and Shades for a Sophisticated Look

Maybe you already have something in your windows that just isn't giving your rooms the atmosphere you want? You don't have to toss them and start from scratch — adding curtains or drapery might be a look you will love. Layering products or textures creates dimension for a more finished look. Choose a fabric that compliments both the tones in the room and the color of the existing product so that the eye is drawn to the window but not overwhelmed. Think also of the layout of your space. By mounting the curtains higher than the window frame and low to the floor, you can create the illusion of a larger window and a more airy, spacious vibe. If you mount your curtain rod and fabrics close to the frame, you run the risk of a smaller, more cramped atmosphere rather than a dressy one.

Design Tips for Choosing the Perfect Window Treatments

Small details, like the color of the rod and finials, can also make or break the look you are going for with adding curtains. A classic color such as bronze or black pairs well with most fabrics, while a bright or shiny option, like white or polished silver, may compete too much, drawing your eye away from the big picture. Adding crystal or glass finials will dress up your hardware — like the frosting rosettes on a beautiful cake!
